The best way to use an app with your child is to work together, side by side. Pause every couple of items and make sure your child is comprehending the material. Enhance understanding by using objects your child can touch like blocks, balls or Legos. Instruct your child to tap on separate blocks as they sound out words on the app. Teach your child to understand concepts like big/small, above/below by moving an object above a block or comparing block sizes. Children learn best by seeing and touching real objects and then transferring this to a touch screen or picture. It’s best not to rely on apps to teach your child new concepts that are best learned through multi sensory experiences. Imagine trying to teach a child what sour or sweet means when they haven’t experienced the concept first! Most apps motivate children to practice activities once they have a basic understanding of a concept; just don’t expect apps to teach your child new concepts independently!
One last tip-save money! Try out the free lite version of an app or try the app in our office before you buy. Ask us for advice; we are always happy to help!
